Clare Holland House expansion complete

25 June 2021

Friday 25 June

It was wonderful to see the new wing at Clare Holland House officially opened today.  Paul House a Ngambri-Ngunnawal custodian commenced the event with a meaningful and symbolic Welcome to Country and returned the ashes from the sod-turning smoking ceremony held back in September 2020.  Paul invited our Founder and Chair, Terry Snow AM to dig the ashes back in the garden bed of the new wing as Paul played the Didgeridoo.  Speeches followed by Barb Reid, Calvary Health Care ACT Regional CEO, Terry Snow AM, and Minister Health, Rachel Stephen-Smith MLA. The Archbishop of Canberra and Goulburn The Most Reverend Christopher Prowse concluded the ceremony with a blessing of the new wing.

Terry Snow AM said, we have really enjoyed being part of this project, we’ve been there from the beginning and have had members on both the Steering Committee and Project Control Group.  The $2 million donation towards the expansion is one of the largest single donations made in its 30 years’ existence.

“Our Foundation and our family have a deep commitment to the Canberra community. We are thrilled to see this new wing to Clare Holland House complete, which will expand the world-class palliative care services to more people in the Canberra region.

“We acknowledge the contributions of others to this special expansion – so far $30,000 has been donated through a community fundraiser enabled by Hands Across Canberra, Calvary and ourselves.

“We know many people have a strong emotional connection to Clare Holland House and you can still contribute to the community fundraiser for the extra touches – furnishings, landscaping, and gardens – that will help create this special expanded home for patients and their friends and family.”

The $6 million expansion funded by The Snow Foundation and the Commonwealth Government, and delivered by the ACT Government, provides an additional eight palliative care inpatient beds enabling palliative care for an additional 250 patients a year.
