Meet Cheryl O’Donnell

24 January 2025

What’s your name and position?

Cheryl O’Donnell, CEO of Canberra PCYC

Tell me about the goal of Canberra PCYC?
We’re committed to breaking the cycle of disadvantage for vulnerable young people, whether they’re facing homelessness, disengaged from education, or dealing with other challenges. We aim to provide a safe space where young people can find guidance, skills development, and a sense of belonging to help them reintegrate into society and thrive. Through our programs, which focus on mentorship, education, and practical pathways like vocational training, we help young people grow, build confidence, and reduce their risk of becoming involved in the justice system.

How has PCYC grown in reach over the years?
Canberra PCYC was established in 1957 as a small community-focused organisation and now operates across multiple locations in Canberra with specialised staff, including case managers, trainers, and mentors.

What are some success stories you’re proud of?
One standout success story is from the ‘Cruisin Café.’ A young woman, after facing significant challenges, developed her skills and gained work experience through the program. She now has full-time employment in hospitality and serves as a youth champion, mentoring others. Similarly, our Southside Mower Shed program has also created meaningful employment and personal growth opportunities for many young people.

What are your long-term dreams for PCYC in terms of expanding its impact?
My long-term vision is to create a comprehensive support ecosystem for at-risk youth in Canberra, providing access to education, employment, mental health support, housing, and a strong sense of community.

If unlimited resources were available, what would you implement?
I’d expand mental health and well-being programs, create more social enterprises for job training, and build dedicated housing support services. I’d also focus on early intervention programs for younger children showing signs of disengagement.

What keeps you motivated on tough days?
What always makes me smile is seeing young people realise their potential. One moment that stands out is when a participant shared they had never felt so supported before. On tough days, it’s their resilience and small but significant victories that keep me motivated. I love hearing them laugh and experience positive moments through our programs.

What are your main goals for the next year?
Our goals include expanding the Pathways to Empowerment (P2E) program, strengthening our social enterprises, and securing funding for more outreach vehicles. We aim to deepen partnerships with schools and community organisations to reach more young people.

How can the community or other organisations support PCYC’s mission?
The community can support PCYC by volunteering, participating in fundraising events, or sponsoring programs. Local businesses can help by offering job opportunities or mentorship. Visit the Canberra PCYC  website and learn about the wide range of programs we deliver to empower and support young people in our community. If you’d like to contribute, donations can be made online or by contacting us directly.
